Visionary Kusama

Updated: Dec 6, 2020

Born into a farming family in 1929, Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama experienced vivid hallucinations in elementary school which she has since attributed as the inspiration behind many of her distinctive motifs, meant to challenge our 2D and 3D perceptions of common objects such as polka dots, flowers, and, more famously, pumpkins, her most sought-after pieces.

Still pushing boundaries at age 91, Kusama works primarily in sculpture, but is also active in painting, film, fashion, poetry, fiction, performance art and installations.

Artist: Yayoi Kusama
